Creation Science and Genesis account
Scripture was not written by scientists for scientists, but it was written by men living in ancient times. The story of Genesis, written by Moses around 1450 BC, was written when people lived in the Late Bronze Age. Primitive stone tools bronze were used for working the land, to make weapons, and to build houses. Writing as we have known that was recently introduced, but not a widespread technique. The great emphasis of everyday life is to find food to survive. Natural science is limited to personal observation. Many of those days were polytheists, worshiped natural phenomena such as sun, moon, stars, fire and water.
Moses, author of the creation account in Genesis, had educated in Egypt. Ancient Egypt flourished from 3000 BC to the early centuries. Their successes are based mainly on irrigation from the Nile Valley, the early development of writing basic trade with some regions, and military force. The Egyptians believed in a complex network of multiple gods and a future life that emphasized the preservation the body, so the mummies. Moses' Egyptian background is also evident in the choice of words in the Hebrew text.
This is the context in which the story of Genesis must be read and understood. People 3500 years ago had no concept of knowledge as we have in our time. What can not be be seen or experienced personally would be beyond their ability to understand.
In Genesis, it places great emphasis on the creation of "days" (translated from the Hebrew word yowm In English-speaking circles these days is usually interpreted as 24-hour days. As noted in Chapter 2, these "days" should be the focal point of discussion. Given this history of the Jews, including Moses, events distant in time would that little sense and probably could not understand. Yowms use to describe the process of creation seems a logical choice to convey a difficult concept in a language and an account that could be grasped by contemporaries of Moses.
Independent of whether yowm is a day of 24 hours or some other expression of time, the text of the first chapter of Genesis shows some remarkable ideas:
• There is one God: The vast majority of ancient religions are polytheistic, like the Egyptian beliefs. Genesis establishes the concept of one God.
• God is outside of creation: The old gods were represented by natural phenomena, usually the sun (the Egyptian god Ra) or moon (worshiped as Thoth by the Egyptians). In Genesis, God created the universe: "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth "(Genesis 1:1).
• There was a principle: the most ancient religions believed that the universe had always existed. Until the mid-twentieth century, even many scientists still believed that the universe had always existed. Only in our generation has the science – particularly astronomy – showed conclusively that the universe had a starting point (Big Bang). As Moses was aware of it?
• The beginning was not by chance. The principle does not just happen, but that is because God made ( "God created …"). Big Bang cosmology does not have response to that statement.
• The original conditions were not suitable for life: Whatever the exact condition of the primordial atmosphere of Earth could have been, scientists agree that it could have supported life. Genesis confirms additional steps were needed once the earth was created.
• Do not preceded life life. Vegetation preceded animal life: According to Genesis, God created the plant life at the end of the third day. This is consistent with natural science, which asserts amino acids form proteins or RNA that lead to living organisms. The vegetation is essential to produce oxygen for our atmosphere for the life of animals might appear.
• Simple preceded complex: The fossil record leads to the conclusion that natural science bodies simple preceded more complex forms of life. Genesis describes the order of events.
• Humanity at the end: According to the observations science, modern man once appeared recently in the geological record, by all life forms. Genesis teaches that God created the humanity in the last day of creation.
Amazing, even maddening! These words come to mind when one realizes how accurately the 3,500 year-old story of Genesis describes what human science has only discovered in the last 50 years. More than any generation before us, we scientific knowledge showing that Moses was right. But how could Moses have known – unless of God's revelation – how our world came to be?
